Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. It originated in the mid-1980s hardcore punk movement of Washington, D.C., where it was known as "emotional hardcore" or "emocore" and pioneered by bands such as Rites of Spring and Embrace. As the style was echoed by contemporary American punk rock bands, its sound and meaning shifted and changed, blending with pop punk and indie rock and encapsulated in the early 1990s by groups such as Jawbreaker and Sunny Day Real Estate. By the mid 1990s numerous emo acts emerged from the Midwestern and Central United States, and several independent record labels began to specialize in the style.

Emo broke into mainstream culture in the early 2000s with the platinum-selling success of Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional and the emergence of the subgenre "screamo". In recent years the term "emo" has been applied by critics and journalists to a variety of artists, including multiplatinum acts and groups with disparate styles and sounds.

In addition to music, "emo" is often used more generally to signify a particular relationship between fans and artists, and to describe related aspects of fashion, culture, and behavior.

How long will it take to grow emo hair and what is your opinion of it?
Q. First, I have taken a look back at my life and into myself, and also have taken tests in psychology classes and personality tests online and in other institutions. The results show that all my life I've been very introverted, had a high level of neuroticism due to self-concious thoughts plaguing my every breath, and a bit of creativity and many compliments from professors in terms of my writing. A counselor I spoke with during a time where I just felt the urge to die concluded that I may have avoidant personality disorder. If you know society's stereotypes, I scream emo. Music wise, I listen to punk rock, but emo was created from punk so it works. Call me what you want, but I like the emo look, and certaintly wouldn't be a poser the way… [cont.]

A. Audioengineer2005 has an excellent point. I can understand how you would want to be emo having the personality and experiences you do, and the fact that emo exploded into the norm overnight and is still a recent trend/fashion, but you are what you are on the inside, not outside. Yeah, it sounds like a corny, live-in-a-perfect-world lie from grandma and grandpa, but it's the truth, no matter how much anyone denies it. You shouldn't be concerned much of your appearance. especially not in terms of what contorted society label you'll be. Focusing too much on that can make you forget about more important things, like family. Do you have a grandmother? Take a minute to think about her. How much time does she have left? Is she happy? Maybe a… [cont.]

What is the suitable time to go for an emo hair cut?
Q. I'd like to cut an emo hairstyle but my hair isn't all that long. When is the right time for me to go to the saloon, give him a picture of the hairstyle I want, and then cut it? When it gets really long? Or when it's medium length? I'd like tips, thanks. Also, does emo hairstyle need any wax\gel to apply on? I can't imagine what happens when a strong wind blows through a hair like that.

A. I'd say wait for your hair to grow a bit, or depending on how long it already is, start getting your bangs cut sideswept. Also, after a few times of going to a stylist, you might want to try cutting it yourself. It's really easy and looks nice and choppy. It really depends on how you style it. i'd just use mouse or spray if you're just straightening it, or doing the little puff at the back. if you're just sorta making your hair go all over the place and go all spikey i would use gel or pomade.
