Emotion is the complex psychophysiological experience of an individual's state of mind as interacting with biochemical and environmental influences. In humans, emotion fundamentally involves "physiological arousal, expressive behaviors, and conscious experience". Emotion is associated with mood, temperament, personality and disposition, and motivation. The English word 'emotion' is derived from the French word émouvoir. This is based on the Latin emovere, where e- (variant of ex-) means 'out' and movere means 'move'. The related term "motivation" is also derived from the word movere.

No definitive taxonomy of emotions exists, though numerous taxonomies have been proposed. Some categorizations include:

  • 'Cognitive' versus 'non-cognitive' emotions
  • Instinctual emotions (from the amygdala), versus cognitive emotions (from the prefrontal cortex).
  • Categorization based on duration: Some emotions occur over a period of seconds (for example, surprise), whereas others can last years (for example, love).

A related distinction is between the emotion and the results of the emotion, principally behaviors and emotional expressions. People often behave in certain ways as a direct result of their emotional state, such as crying, fighting or fleeing. If one can have the emotion without the corresponding behavior, then we may consider the behavior not to be essential to the emotion. Neuroscientific research suggests there is a "magic quarter second" during which it's possible to catch a thought before it becomes an emotional reaction. In that instant, one can catch a feeling before allowing it to take hold.

The James-Lange theory posits that emotional experience is largely due to the experience of bodily changes. The functionalist approach to emotions (for example, Nico Frijda and Freitas-Magalhaes) holds that emotions have evolved for a particular function, such as to keep the subject safe.

What is the difference between being emotional and being sensitive?
Q. Can a sensitive person not be emotional? I'm not a native English speaker, so any help from native people are appreciated, thanks!
Asked by Mausi - Mon Nov 16 11:10:38 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sensitive means that you feel things. It can be neutral or a negative. If someone says that you are "too sensitive," it means that you can't handle criticism and will cry or pout when someone says a word against you. Sensitive in a good or neutral way means a person who pays attention to the feelings of other people. If someone cares if you are happy or sad, you can say, "he's such a sensitive guy," in a good way. Emotional means being ruled by one's emotions. It can be a state or a permanent condition. If someone gets really angry and scary/violent when angry, we might say "he's too emotional." A person can be emotional, meaning they are never rational or calm and can't handle when things go wrong. They cry or get angry too… [cont.]

What's the difference between emotional and mental abuse?
Q. Aren't they the same thing? If someone is verbally abusing you is it emotional or mental or does it differ in certain situations.
Asked by Paksennarion - Sun Jan 6 03:23:07 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The difference isn't really significant. If someone abuses you mentally, it doesn't have to be emotional. Emotional abuse is mental abuse, though.

What is the best way to stop emotional eating?
Q. I have been trying off and on the last couple years to lose weight. I can generally do alright at exercise, but I can't seem to stop eating out and eating too much of the "wrong" foods. No day in my mind can be good unless I eat out or eat comfort foods. What can I do to get food untied from my emotional state?
Asked by short guy - Wed Sep 6 03:37:45 2006 - - 10 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Leave the comfort food on the shelves in the supermarket, buy extra fruit and veg, that way you gorge on healthy stuff, It does work trust me, I do it often.
